Average Bat Speed by Age

5 min readUpdated July 15, 2026

Bat speed is the speed of the barrel at the moment of contact, measured in miles per hour. It's the largest contributor to exit velocity — increase bat speed, and exit velo follows.

Bat speed by age

Typical bat speed ranges based on Blast Motion and Diamond Kinetics data.

10U

Average: 40–48 mph.

12U

Average: 48–58 mph.

14U

Average: 58–65 mph.

High school

Average: 65–75 mph. D1 recruits: 75+ mph.

College

Average: 72–80 mph.

Training to increase bat speed

Overload/underload bat training (typically a bat 20% heavier and 20% lighter than your gamer) done 3x per week for 6 weeks reliably adds 3–5 mph of bat speed.

Frequently asked questions

How is bat speed different from exit velocity?+

Bat speed measures the barrel; exit velo measures the ball. A player with high bat speed but poor contact will have inconsistent exit velo.

What sensor should I use?+

Blast Motion attaches to the knob and is the most popular for player tracking. Diamond Kinetics is also excellent.
