Pitch Velocity Age Projection

3 min readUpdated July 15, 2026

Fastball velocity typically increases 3–5 mph per year through puberty, then 1–2 mph per year afterward. Project your future velocity using your current age and current fastball.

Rule of thumb

Take your current velocity, add (18 – current age) × 3 for players 12–14, or × 2 for players 15–17. A 13-year-old throwing 65 mph projects to roughly 80 mph as a senior. Nature and training determine actual outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I project D1 velocity from age 12?+

Not reliably. Late bloomers often catch and pass early developers. Focus on the process, not projections.
