How to Increase Exit Velocity

7 min readUpdated July 15, 2026

Exit velocity is the single best predictor of hitting success at every level of baseball. The good news: it's trainable. Most hitters can add 4–8 mph over a focused 6–8 week block by attacking bat speed, lower-body strength, and barrel accuracy at the same time.

The three levers

Ignore any program that only trains one of these — you leave gains on the table.

1. Bat speed

Overload/underload bat training (a bat ~20% heavier and ~20% lighter than your gamer) 3x per week for 6 weeks reliably adds 3–5 mph of bat speed.

2. Lower-body strength

Trap-bar deadlifts, front squats, and hip-hinge power work drive the rotational force your barrel converts to exit velo.

3. Barrel accuracy

You cannot hit the ball hard if you don't hit it square. Tee and front-toss work with feedback (Blast/Diamond Kinetics or video) matters as much as brute strength.

A proven 6-week block

Do this alongside your normal team practice. Expect 4–8 mph added when measured on a calibrated device.

Days 1, 3, 5

Overload/underload bat swings (10 heavy, 10 light, 10 gamer, 3 rounds) + 30 tee swings focused on quality contact.

Days 2, 4

Lower body strength: trap-bar deadlift 3x5, front squat 3x5, med-ball rotational throws 3x6 each side.

Day 6

Front toss + live BP if available. Track top-5 exit velo average.

Day 7

Full recovery. Sleep 9+ hours, mobility, low-key catch.

Track progress the right way

Measure once every 2 weeks with 10 swings off a tee and average your top 5. Daily numbers create noise; the trend line is what matters. Log every session in Diamond Development so you can see the curve.

Frequently asked questions

How fast can I add exit velocity?+

Most high schoolers add 4–8 mph in 6–8 weeks with a structured block. Youth players often see bigger jumps because they have more room to grow.

Do heavier bats hurt my swing?+

Not when used as part of an overload/underload program — the alternation is what drives adaptation. Never take a heavy bat into a game.

What about my swing plane?+

Bat speed only helps if you hit the ball square. Any exit-velo block should include tee work with feedback on contact quality.
